The Square Knot
The Reef Knot, also known as the Square Knot, is a binding knot used to secure two ends of the same rope or cord together, most commonly for bundling, tying packages, securing bandages, and reefing sails. It is valued for its simplicity, symmetry, and ease of tying, consisting of two opposing overhand knots tied in sequence. Because it lies flat and can be untied quickly after use, it has remained one of the most widely recognized knots in the world.

Today, the Reef Knot is listed in The Ashley Book of Knots (ABOK #1204) and is regarded as a classic binding knot rather than a bend for joining ropes under load. Its structure creates a neat, balanced knot when tied correctly as “right over left, left over right” (or vice versa). While effective for binding and securing objects, it can become unstable when used to join ropes that are heavily loaded, of different diameters, or subjected to fluctuating tension
Key Considerations
Proper dressing of the Reef Knot is important to ensure its characteristic symmetrical appearance and reliable performance. When correctly tied, the knot forms two interlocking bights that lie flat against one another. An incorrectly tied Reef Knot can result in the less secure Granny Knot or the historically significant Thief’s Knot, both of which have different characteristics and uses. As with all knots, it should be inspected after tying to verify it has been formed correctly.
Advantages & Disadvantages
One of the key advantages of the Reef Knot is its speed and simplicity. It can be tied and untied quickly without requiring complex movements, making it useful for everyday binding tasks and first-aid applications. However, because it is not designed for critical load-bearing situations, it should not be relied upon for climbing, rescue work, or joining ropes under significant tension. In such applications, more secure bends and loop knots are generally preferred.
