The Granny Knot

The Granny Knot is a simple binding knot formed by tying two identical overhand knots in sequence. It closely resembles the Reef Knot (Square Knot) but differs in its structure, resulting in a less stable and less secure knot. Historically, it has been used for light-duty binding tasks, but it is generally regarded as an inferior alternative to the Reef Knot due to its tendency to slip, distort, and come apart under load.

Today, the Granny Knot is listed in The Ashley Book of Knots (ABOK #1206) and is commonly referenced as an example of an incorrectly tied Reef Knot. Its asymmetrical structure prevents the knot from lying flat, causing it to twist and become unstable when tension is applied. Because of this behaviour, it is not recommended for critical binding or rope-joining applications where security is important.

Key Considerations

Proper dressing of the Granny Knot is important primarily for identification, as it is often tied accidentally when attempting to form a Reef Knot. When viewed closely, the knot lacks the neat, symmetrical appearance of a correctly tied Square Knot and instead forms a twisted configuration. Recognizing this difference is an important part of basic knot knowledge and helps prevent unintended use of the weaker knot.

Advantages & Disadvantages

One of the key characteristics of the Granny Knot is its simplicity rather than its performance. While it can be tied quickly and may be adequate for temporary or very light-duty tasks, it offers few advantages over the Reef Knot and is generally avoided when a secure binding knot is required. Today, it is most often taught as a cautionary example of how a small change in tying sequence can significantly affect a knot’s effectiveness.
